In The Underwood is a graphic novel that illustrates the intense personal struggle of people experiencing anxiety and depression in their life. Taking inspiration from stories such as Alice in Wonderland and Little Red Riding Hood, the novel is layered with colours, textures, visual allegories, and various fantastical elements to emphasize the struggle one feels when trapped and bombarded by negative thoughts and emotions. The story draws upon significant moments in the author's life, where social anxiety greatly affected her, and how she learned to understand and manage her mental health. From a young girl in elementary school, through high school and onward, In The Underwood is a small glimpse into the very real struggle that accompanies anxiety and depression. It is hoped that her story can help others understand that they are not alone.
